Learning How To Think

I remember back when I was around the age of 15, I said schools should really teach students how to think. My friends (at that time) scoffed and said: "Do people really need to be taught how to think? Pffft."

Arrogance.

Arrogance to think that just because you're good at something, others should be as well. Believe me, I've fallen into that same trap. But some of the things we are good at don't come easy to others. Thinking is one of those things that a lot of people find difficult. It's easy to assume, accuse, judge, but it's not easy to think. And don't get me wrong, assuming, accusing, and judging are all parts of the process before someone starts to think. We all do that because it's human nature.

Thinking is difficult, therefore let the herd pronounce judgment!

— Carl Jung, Collected Works of C.G. Jung, Volume 10 (Civilization in Transition)

As a teacher, I have to be consciously aware of this because with your strengths come the expectations that others should be good at it as well. But teaching others how to think doesn't start with telling them to think, it comes with modelling and helping them give some form and structure to their thoughts. And one of the best ways to do so is to help them verbalise it and then write it down or type it out. But before you can do so, you have to understand the intricate processes of how YOU think, because if you don't know HOW you think, you can kiss the possibility of teaching others how to think goodbye.
